Volunteer water quality monitors in the Sabine Basin recently participated in the observance of the first annual Texas Watch Earth Day. This statewide sampling initiative emphasized the importance of water quality in Texas. Volunteer monitors across the state sampled surface and ground water, coupled with professional water quality sampling efforts to realistically portray "A Day in the Life of Texas Waters". The purpose of the monitoring event was to raise public awareness of the Texas Watch program and water quality issues as well as to put together a snapshot of water quality throughout the state in a one day time period. The event incorporated live, real time documentation of monitoring results that were viewed on the Internet throughout the course of the day. Upon completion of individual samplings at their respective monitoring locations, volunteer monitors submitted their results for the water temperature and dissolved oxygen variables to Texas Watch headquarters for processing and posting on the World Wide Web. Monitors in the Sabine Basin included: Biologists with the City of Longview; Environmental Justice Students from Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX; Chemistry students from Kilgore College; and Students from Woody Cox's Environmental Science Class at Little Cypress Mauriceville High School.
The Mission of the Texas WatchTo facilitate environmental stewardship by empowering a statewide network of concerned volunteers, partners, and institutions in a collaborative effort to promote a healthy and safe environment through environmental education, data collection, and community action. For more information on the Texas Watch Volunteer Monitoring Program, visit the Texas Watch Website: http://www.texaswatch.geo.swt.edu/ or contact the upper or lower basin field office. |
